Ceramic (Zirconium Oxide) Dental Implants: An alternative to metal (titanium) implants
Dental implants have a rather long and fascinating history. The oldest “dental implant” that has been found, was a copper stud embedded in the jaw of an ancient Egyptian 3000 years ago. Fast forward to modern dental implants, which have been in existence since the 1970’s. They are by far the best option to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are fabricated from a variety of materials such as titanium (the most common), stainless steel, titanium alloy and zirconium oxide ceramics.
Zirconia (zirconium oxide) or ceramic implants are a fairly recent development in this rapidly changing technology. Zirconia implants are biocompatible, and made of the hardest substance next to diamonds. The Europeans have been using zirconia implants for many years and they have recently been approved by the FDA for use in the United States.
What are zirconium/ zirconia/ ceramic dental implants?
Zirconium oxide ceramics have outstanding mechanical properties and are used in a wide range of applications including combustion engines and hip prostheses. They are highly stable, biocompatible, and resistant to scratching and corrosion. Zirconium oxide is similar in color to natural teeth, creating a more esthetically pleasing result. Zirconia is also currently used to fabricate dental crowns and implant abutments (the part of the implant above the gum).
Zirconia dental implants vs titanium dental implants
Titanium implants have a long history of use in the United States and therefore many long term studies have been performed. They are highly regarded and studies show a remarkably high success rate. There is a wide variety of sizes available in titanium implants. They are generally placed in two parts, and with a range of interchangeable parts, good esthetic results are achieved, especially on front teeth. Zirconium implants, on the other hand, are one piece allowing minimal flexibility once the implant is placed. Skilled surgeons can place a one piece zirconia implant for optimal esthetics and function. Zirconia implants are however, the only non-metal substance from which implants are made and are a preferred by patients who choose to keep their mouths metal-free.
Not all patients are candidates for dental implants. You must be evaluated by your dentist to see if dental implants are right for you.
